Complément d’objet indirect: a design exhibition in Brussels

t-bag

This exhibition shows contemporary practices of graphic design around a common theme, object. When graphic design is released by the command and starts evolving by itself, the issue is the relationship they
have with private space (at home) and public space (at everyone).

The graphical object is not a design object. It doesn’t serve a purpose but offers multiple uses. Freed of practical constraints it becomes an object of language and creates a language which is aimed at all….

In French grammar, to recognize the COI, ask questions “to whom?” or “to what?”, “from who?” or “ from what?”. The graphic artworks and ‘goodies’ that will be displayed in the exhibition will address us with those essential art questions; where from and where to…

The War on Errors

war on errors

The War on Terror, War on Drugs or War on Poverty all have a thing in common: they will most likely never be won. Same goes for the War on Errors, which is the way we could name the daily struggle of designers to hand out graphic design work without mistakes.

This is obviously much harder to do for infography tasks, especially in the news industry where work has to be done quickly and under pressure, thus leading to hilarious mistakes for the viewers, but not for the designer. Taking a look at some mistakes, it seems that maps set a pretty good ground for errors.

cnn error

This map has a very loose interpretation of where the major french cities should be and of the size of France.

swiss american map

This one is taken from the Swiss airlines website and has a strange conception of where amercian cities are supposed to be. That’s of course far worst than news illustration mistakes, since travelling is the core of an airlines’ business.

Hey, where is Slovakia? Mmmmh… let’s just put it here, nobody will notice.

Modular kit homes in Styrofoam

dome houses

Remember Antti Lovag? His name came to my mind immediatly when I first read this article on Pink Tentacle. Not only those styrofoam made houses look like his architecture, the whole concept has many similarities with what Lovag wanted to achieve. It’s organic, modular, easy to build and very resistant.

5 great photography projects by Philippe Toledano

Thanks to social media sites like Digg or StumbleUpon, Philippe Toledano has become a very popular photographer on the web. I am also a big fan of his work for its beauty of course, but also because Toledano has great ideas and offers an original look on societal topics.

days with my father

Days with my father

Very touching project. Toledano took regular photos of his 98 years old father and publishes it with comments, setting a record of his fathers last days and giving a look on the situation of the elderly.

Hope & Fear

Surrealistic work about the internal desires and paranoia of a country: America. Quite disturbing.

Still not sure if this project is funny or sad. A serie of phone-sex operators portraits with a little anecdote they share about their work.

Twitter for designers

It took me a long time to get on Twitter and start using the service. I didn’t see the interest of it and “following people” sounded a little creepy to me. Now I’ve become a regular user and quite addicted to it.

So if you are not a user yet, here are a few good reasons to join and follow me.

  • Connect with peers
Certainly the best thing about Twitter. It makes it very easy to chat with other bloggers, and even to connect with popular bloggers.
  • Share links
Many people share what they are reading or watching, and so should you. A very fine way to find good stuff on the web.
  • Search for hot topics
Twitter is like an giant ongoing conversation. You will easily figure out trends and search for more informations on the site. You can even search for a job that way.
  • Get answers
Ask your questions to all your followers or directly to one of them, and get a quick answer. People who are popular on Twitter get many answers that way, but don’t expect this to work if you got 15 followers.

So why don’t you go ahead and connect with me, also look at this list of 50 designers on Twitter.
