In western society you will find that when someone mentions the word ‘engaged’, one of the first things that pop into your mind will often be ‘engagement ring’.

Engagement rings, as well as jewellery in general, have come to be synonymous with the marriage process. So synonymous, in fact, that if someone was to propose to their loved one without an engagement ring they would soon find themselves on the receiving end of a few raised eyebrows from their friends and families.

Where does this expectation come from? Is it a construct of the modern age, or is it a practice that can trace its roots back to the beginning of time?

Diamond experts Vashi have set out to answer this question with a brand new interactive web experience that attempts to chart the journey of the engagement ring right from its inception through to the present day. Prepare to be surprised at just how far back this symbolic gesture goes!
