In a perfect world, we would already have alternate clean sources of energy, we would not waste so much and we would stop using plastic bags. But we don’t live in a perfect world, and we need to find the best solutions to deal with the waste.
VolkerWessels, a Dutch construction group, commissionned a company to work on a plastic road project. The roads would be made of blocks that use recycled plastic. In a Lego-style, the blocks could be put together to form eco-friendly roads.
The block structure should make it very easy to assemble the roads, as well as make it easier to build roads on swamp ground. The blocks of road would also have a space inside to put cables and other infrastcture needed.
This technology would save the environment in two ways. One, it would make good use of plastic waste. Second, asphalt takes tons of CO2 to create, and this wouldn’t be needed anymore.
Of course, this is only a concept, so future will tell us if it is a viable one. How will the plastic be transform and at what cost? Will the roads be resistant enough and the surface appropriate? All these questions will be studied by the studio hired by VolkerWessels.
